"In for a Penny's"

Review: Penny's, 11 Leigh Road, Wimborne

When I heard there was a new vegetarian restaurant opening in Wimborne, I was among the first to venture through the doors.
Although most restaurants these days do offer vegetarian options, some of them excellent, since giving up meat more that 20 years ago I can't count the number of mushroom risottos and vegetable lasagnes I've eaten!

So it was with joy that I scanned the 'specials of the day' board at Penny's on busy Saturday lunchtime after a morning doing the 'circuit' of Wimborne shops.
As soon as you walk through the door you start to feel healthier - the decor is cheerful Scandinavian, with lots of bare wood, red and white gingham, and heart motifs. It's not overdone though, and the atmosphere is relaxed, warm and friendly.
So much so, we were asked if we'd mind sharing a table, as we weren't the only ones to explore the new venue.

Before sitting down we were shown the days selection and it was a tough choice - the homemade soup and the Quorn Korma looked creamy and tempting - but I eventually went for the aromatic Moroccan vegetables, while my sister chose the freshly made mushroom quiche, with a large bowl of mixed salad to share.

My Moroccan vegetables were spicy and delicious, without being over-hot and contained chickpeas and big chunks of sweet potato in a rich tomatoey sauce.
My sisters quiche tasted of freshly picked field mushrooms and was one of the best she'd tasted.
The salad was also inventive and appetising, with shredded raw beetroot, broccoli, red cabbage and even a few olives and almonds.

Heaven!

After initially avoiding the homemade puddings, we decided it would be a sin not to try them out, so after much deliberation went for the lemon cheesecake and the strawberry sherry trifle.
Both were light and delicious, with fresh garnishes of strawberry and blueberries.

Everything tasted fresh and full of flavour, and prices were incredibly reasonable.

Our meal, including two sparkling elderflower drinks, came to £22.50

At the moment Penny's is only open for coffees and lunches, but I cant wait for them to offer evening meals too. Although they are located a short stroll from the town centre, its well worth the walk!
